Fending Off Death 2 by wiebkefesch Fending Off Death 2 by wiebkefesch
Color shot of a frieze on the exterior of the the Fulton County Dept. of Health and Wellness, a.k.a the county health department, in Downtown Atlanta. The building is 1950s and it seems like this frieze is depicting health, e.g. doctor fending off Death himself. The other one, which I will post, is less obvious.

Dear Wiebkefesch,

We would like to use your photo in a slide show and print publication for the December issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery. We will alter the photo somewhat by removing the background. Would you be willing to send me your full name for attribution and agreeing to allow us to use your photo?  Scott Clamp, Department of Neurosurgery, UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas   email is scott.clamp@utsouthwestern.edu

Thanks,

Scott

It's right in my neighborhood, across from the main public hospital, but I never noticed it until a couple of months ago. I saw a skull and ran over.

Fascinating piece. What a depiction of the struggle of health and wellness over death. Truly unusual. Nice find.

Isn't it, though? What I find shocking is that a colleague of mine, who works in the next building over and has for five years, never noticed it until the day I was visiting. People are so oblivious!

Too true, it's like when people go to another region on vacation and the people that live there don't understand why those people want to vacation there..what's the phrase..familiarity breeds contempt...

Isn't it? What amazed me is that the colleague I was visiting the area with, who works next door, had NEVER NOTICED it. Then again, some people are oblivious :)

WOW yeah. This is an image that jumps out. I wonder who the artist was. The building itself looks never then the art deco period.

Holy god. I now wish I'd gone into the medical profession solely so I'd have a good reason to get this tattooed on my back.

It would indeed be good as a tattoo. Top of the back would work.
