Description

Chickens at the Old Sturbridge Village barn. I love chickens.

Old Sturbridge Village, outdoor history museum in Sturbridge, Massachusetts which recreates and celebrates 1830s New England village life. I visited several times as a kid and then a few times after my sister and her family moved to the town -- and now I've gone a lot more since my parents also moved to Sturbridge. They live around a mile away and as residents get free entry. More info - [link]

What a beautiful work this is!
This photo immediately drew my attention as I was browsing the "critiquable" folder of - the rich brown colours and the beautiful texture of the feathers, against the dark brown wood colours and texture of the background...
Two chickens on a beam... how simple can it be... Simple and pretty at the same time. This back chick looking straigth into the camera, with that typical bend of the neck... curious and cautious at the same time... Pity that the front chick is looking away. If you had been able to capture her head just a little bit more in profile, that would have been even better... but, I so well know: animals do not pose, and often don't sit still very long either .

The soft light is so beautiful ... it gives even more texture and nuance to the marvellous feathers of the birds.
And I love the composition. There is a nice closeness and depth in the image.
Only thing I would do to improve this pic, is try and tilt it just a little to the right, so as to have the lines of the wood in the background really vertical.

But overall: a lovely picture, with a great rural feel to it... well done!
